In 1951, with the approval of the Ministry of Education of the Central People's Government, the Russian Department of the College of Literature of Lanzhou University, the Russian Section of the Department of Foreign Languages of Northwestern University and the Russian Specialization Section of Northwestern University were merged to form the predecessor of Xi’an International Studies University. -In 1952, the Russian class of the Party School of the Northwest Bureau of the Communist Party of China was merged into the Northwest Russian College, and it began to train foreign language talents for the country at the undergraduate level.
It was renamed Xi'an Institute of Foreign Languages in 1958 and Xi’an International Studies University in 2006, and started to admit postgraduates in 1979, and became a master's degree granting institution in 1986, a doctoral degree granting institution in 2013, and a postdoctoral research station in 2014. In 2011, Shaanxi Provincial People's Government listed the university as a high-level university to be built during the "12th Five-Year Plan". After 70 years of construction and development, the university has formed a multidisciplinary pattern highlighting the characteristics of foreign language education and humanities and social sciences research, and the coordinated development of seven disciplines, including literature, education, economics, management, law, science and art, etc. It is an important base for training foreign language talents in western China, and plays an irreplaceable role in the field of foreign language education, teaching and research in northwest China.
