As a full-time general institute of higher education under the supervision of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, Nanjing Institute of Tourism and Hospitality (NITH) is also the only model higher vocational college in tourism in the province. The predecessor of the NITH is traced back to the earliest Jiangsu Provincial Tourism School founded in 1978, which was renamed Nanjing Tourism School, and Jinling Hotel Management and Cadre Institute founded in 1989, the only domestic adult education college specializing in cultivating hotel management talents at that time. In 2001, the two colleges merged to run schools and began to enroll ordinary higher vocational college students. In 2007, they were restructured into Nanjing Institute of Tourism and Hospitality. In 2011, NITH successfully passed the Level Assessment for Personnel Training in Vocational Education hosted by the Ministry of Education. In 2015, NITH was selected as a model higher vocational college in Jiangsu Province.
NITH has two campuses in Jiangning District and Gulou District, covering a total area 421 mu, in which Jiangning Campus covers an area of 406 mu and a construction area of 176,100 square meters. It has more than 6,300 full-time students. NITH has nine teaching schools (departments) including Hotel Management School, School of Tourism Management, Culinary Art and Nutrition School, School of Humanities and Arts, School of Further Education, School of Tourism and Foreign Languages, Section of Fundamental Teaching, Section for the Teaching of Ideological and Political Theory, and Section for Teaching of Physical Education. NITH offers 23 programs (excluding directions), including 1 model program in tourism of national vocational college, 2 program construction programs supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, 1 provincial A-level brand program, and 4 provincial high-level key programs, 2 provincial featured programs, 2 provincial clusters of programs for key construction, 5 programs certified by Quality Assurance Systems of World Tourism Organization (UNWTO TedQual). NITH has been awarded 3 second prizes of the Teaching Achievement in China, 3 first prizes and 2 second prizes of the Higher Education and Teaching Achievement in Jiangsu Province, 1 first prize and 1 second prize of the National Informatization Teaching Contest, and 5 first prizes of Jiangsu Provincial Informatization Teaching Contest.
