Shanghai University of Political Science and Law (SHUPL) was established in 1984 and located in the picturesque national-level scenic area of Sheshan Hill in Shanghai, China. The university covers an area of 1000 mu (67 hectares) and is crowned the “garden university at the northern foot of Sheshan Mountain”. We have more than 11,000 full-time postgraduates, undergraduates, vocational college students, and overseas students. The campus is well equipped with teaching and research facilities and nearly 200 off-campus placement bases. Our placement base for legal practice is a national-level off-campus placement base for university students. We were awarded the “National Civilized Unit” in 2011 and 2015, the “Shanghai Civilized Unit” nine times, and the title of “Shanghai Safe and Civilized Campus” four years in a row, and the title of “University featuring education related to National Defense” granted by the Ministry of Education.

Currently, there are more than 40 undergraduate majors in law, Business Administration, International Economics and Trade, Economics and Finance, E-commerce and Law, Political Science and Administration, International Politics, Chinese Language and Literature, Journalism, Radio and Television Studies, Radio and Television Writing and Directing, Chinese Language and International Education. According to the Ranking of China's Best Universities by Software Science 2020, The University ranks 4th in the "2020 China Political and Legal University Ranking". The university ranked 156th out of 1,200 universities in the 2020 Quality Ranking of Chinese University Freshmen.

The university adapts to the needs of the country and society for development by actively responding to national strategies. On September 13th, 2013, President Xi Jinping announced at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Bishkek Summit that the China National Institute for SCO on International Exchanges and Judicial Cooperation (CNISCO) will be established at SHUPL to foster judicial talents for other SCO member states. In 2014, 2015, and 2018, President Xi stressed thrice at the SCO summits in Duschanbe, Ufa, and Qingdao that the institute should serve to help member states train their judicial talents. In 2017, CNISCO has been listed by the Shanghai Municipal Government in the Action Plan of Shanghai for Playing a Bridgehead Role under the“Belt and Road” Initiative.
