It is under the joint administration of Hubei Provincial Government and Wuhan Municipal Government, mainly endorsed by the latter.In October 2001, at the approval of the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People’s Republic of China, the former Jianghan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology Hankou Branch, Wuhan College of Education, and Wuhan Continuing Medical Education College were incorporated into one, which marked the establishment of a new JHU and ushered in a new phase of its development. In June 2002, JHU was moved as a whole to the lakeside area of Sanjiao Lake in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WEDZ). It covers an area of approximately 136 hectares and a floor space of 816,500 square meters.

Since the merger and establishment, various undertakings of the university have been developed steadily, its school-running strength has been continuously improved. From 2018, JHU is a“Domestic First-class Discipline” construction university in Hubei Province. From 2021, JHU is authorized to confer doctoral degree and to build the State Key Laboratory of Precision Blasting. In 2022, it was selected as a key first-class disciplines construction university in Hubei Province. JHU is the first university in Hubei province which has the right to grant doctoral degrees, a state key laboratory and full-time academicians at the same time.
